Program Description:

In June 2015, the Pocket Community Theatre again held their Childrens Theater Workshop, a two week learning experience which introduces young thespians to the mechanics of developing a play to be shown before a live audience. The students learn theater from the ground up. Areas of learning and activity will include stage performance, set design and construction, props, costumes, publicity, poster design and distribution and more.

For 2015, the students developed their skills from two plays, The Trial of Goldilocks and Tales of Hans Christian Andersen.

The Trial of Goldilocks
By Joseph Robinette

Synopsis:

From Dramatic Publishing:

In rhyme, mime and mirth, this exciting comedy examines the familiar fairy tale from three points of view: the traditional, the Bears', then Goldilocks'. Guilty or innocent? Was the young girl a selfish, spoiled brat, intruding where she didn't belong? Or was she the victim of three conniving bears (and their animal "band of hoods" in the woods)? Complete with a hard-of-hearing judge, a harried clerk, two comic lawyers and a jury (of any size)-which gets involved in the action as tables, chairs, beds and forest animals--this charming comedy is perfect for performers of all ages. From the opening moment, when three vendors attempt to hawk souvenirs among the audience, to the surprising verdict from the jury-and a "happily-ever-after" conclusion-this play, performed completely in verse, is both unique and enchanting. As one critic wrote: "The work is entertaining on all levels and is highly educational, both in presenting the same story from different points of view and in involving the child performers in a variety of ways.

Tales of Hans Christian Andersen
Adapted by Carolyn Lane

Synopsis:

Pioneer Drama Service:

From an assortment of surprise packages comes four very special gifts... the gifts of storyteller Hans Christian Andersen to the children of the world. Out of a bright birthday box steps ’The Steadfast Tin Soldier’ to tell of his undying love for a paper dancing doll. A dilapidated old crate yields the comic tale of ’The Swineherd’ who spurns a royal princess, and from a basket of eggs comes the well-loved story of ’The Ugly Duckling.’ The quartet of tales concludes with the touching romance of ’The Little Mermaid’ who loves a human being... the story discovered in an ancient sea chest.
